Navigating the complexities of organizational change requires a blend of strategic insight, communication prowess, and adaptive leadership.

For me, my journey started 15 years ago in the banking industry at the Marketing and Corporate Communications department, where I spent three and a half years honing my skills in internal and external communications. This foundational experience was further enriched in the mining industry, where I focused on media relations and stakeholder engagement and later contributed to the business improvement team as a special adviser to the General Manager of Operations.
Subsequently, I served as the Branch and Marketing Administrator of a government agency, managing daily operations and marketing activities of the regional branch. In 2022, I joined a global change management consultancy firm, providing training, advisory and consulting worldwide to help organizations and people manage change.

Academically, I hold a Bachelor of Applied Science in Communication Management, alongside numerous accreditations through organisations such as the Public Relations Institute of Southern Africa (PRISA), Business Improvement Institute and Project Management Institutes. I am also a Prosci® Certified Change Practitioner, a credential that underscores my commitment to the field of change management.
This article explores the essential skills and steps required to embark on a successful career in change management, drawing on my professional journey and insights.

Q: How did you start your career in change management?
A: I began my professional journey in corporate communications, a role that involved crafting messages, managing public relations, and ensuring consistent internal communication within the organization. While this experience provided me with a solid foundation in understanding organizational dynamics and the importance of clear communication, I found myself increasingly drawn to the strategic aspects of how organizations navigate change. The transition to change management wasn’t an abrupt shift but rather an evolution of my existing skills. My background in corporate communications had already equipped me with key competencies such as stakeholder engagement, persuasive communication, and strategic thinking—all of which are essential in change management. By leveraging these skills and seeking out additional training and certifications, I was able to pivot my career towards this exciting and impactful field.

Q: What skills are essential for a career in change management?
A: Visible leaderships is the cornerstone of successful change management. Strong leadership skills are crucial for gaining buy-in and driving change initiatives. Additionally, you must be able to convey complex ideas clearly and persuasively to a variety of stakeholders, from executives to front-line employees. Change managers often need to lead cross-functional teams and inspire confidence in their ability to guide the organization through transitions. Understanding the implications of change and assessing its impact on different parts of the organization requires strong analytical skills. This involves both qualitative and quantitative analysis to make informed decisions. The ability to adapt to new situations and challenges is vital. Change managers must be flexible and open to adjusting their strategies as new information becomes available or as circumstances shift. Managing change often involves coordinating multiple projects simultaneously. Project management skills help ensure that change initiatives are delivered on time, within budget, and with the desired outcomes. Lastly, understanding and managing your own emotions, as well as those of others, is key to navigating the often turbulent waters of change. High emotional intelligence helps build trust and rapport with stakeholders.

Q: What steps should someone take to start a career in change management?
A: Start by gaining experience in roles that involve elements of change, such as project management, corporate communications, IT, or HR, just to name a few. These positions can provide a valuable foundation and expose you to the dynamics of organizational change. Pursuing formal education in change management or related fields, such as organizational psychology or business administration, can also be beneficial. Additionally, obtaining certifications like Prosci® Change Management Certification can enhance your credibility and knowledge. Building a network of professionals in the field can provide support, mentorship, and opportunities for collaboration. Join professional organizations, attend industry conferences, and participate in online forums to connect with others. Finding a mentor who has experience in change management can provide valuable guidance and insights. A mentor can help you navigate challenges, identify growth opportunities, and offer practical advice based on their own experiences. Lastly, the field of change management is constantly evolving. Stay up-to-date with the latest trends, tools, and methodologies by reading industry publications, attending workshops, and participating in continuous learning opportunities.

Q: Why is it important to develop change management skills?
A: In an era where disruption is the norm, the ability to manage change effectively is a strategic advantage for any organization. Change management professionals help companies pivot through internal and external changes, ensuring that transitions are not only smooth but also align with the organization’s long-term goals. By developing skills in communication, leadership, adaptability, and more, you can play a critical role in helping organizations navigate their journey through change. Embarking on a career in change management can be both challenging and rewarding. With the right skills, experience, and mindset, you can make a significant impact on organizations, guiding them through the complexities of change and driving them towards success.

Q: To conclude, what does the future of change management look like?
A: The future of change management is poised to be dynamic and increasingly integral to organizational success. As technology continues to advance, change management will likely incorporate more digital tools and data analytics to predict and measure the impact of change initiatives. The rise of remote work and global teams means that change management strategies will need to be more flexible and inclusive, addressing the diverse needs of a geographically dispersed workforce. Furthermore, as organizations face continuous disruption from market shifts, regulatory changes, and emerging technologies, the demand for skilled change managers will grow. This will require professionals to stay updated with the latest trends and continuously hone their skills. Lastly, there will be a greater emphasis on integrating change management with other business disciplines, such as agile methodologies and design thinking, to foster a more holistic approach to managing change.
